How to use the Threads character counter
Type or paste a Threads post and the counter shows the characters used, how many remain before the 500-character limit, and a warning when you are close. Spaces, line breaks and emoji all count. If you are writing a multi-post thread, check each post on its own: the limit applies to every post in the chain, including replies.
Threads shows the whole post in the feed without a more link, so unlike Instagram captions there is no hidden tail. That makes the 500 characters feel generous for a single thought and tight for anything that needs structure; if a post wants three paragraphs, it is usually two posts.

Posts can be up to 500 characters and carry images, video or a link; links are clickable and do not shorten the text allowance the way they do on X. Hashtags work differently from other networks: Threads lets you add a single topic tag per post rather than a list of hashtags, so put keywords in the text instead. There is no bold or italic formatting, and line breaks are preserved.
Threads opened its API in 2024 and added native scheduling in 2025, so you can plan posts in the app itself or in any scheduler that supports Threads.

Most major schedulers now publish to Threads through the official API; support for reply chains and multi-post threads is less consistent, so check the profile page before you rely on it.
