Instagram Caption Character Counter
Check caption length before you schedule Instagram posts, Reels, or carousel copy in your content calendar.
Instagram caption limits can vary by post type. Always verify in the Instagram app before publishing critical campaigns.
How to use the Instagram caption counter
Paste your caption into the box and the counter shows the total characters, how many remain before the 2,200-character limit, and a warning as you approach it. It counts spaces, line breaks, emoji and hashtags, which is how Instagram counts them too. Write the caption the way you want it to read, then check the number; cutting a long caption is easier than padding a short one.
Only the first 125 characters or so show in the feed before the more link, and fewer on smaller phones, so put the hook, the offer or the question in that first line. Everything after it is for people who have already decided to read.
Instagram caption limits worth knowing
Feed posts, carousels and Reels share the 2,200-character caption limit. You can use up to 30 hashtags per post, counting those in the caption and the first comment together; most accounts do better with 3 to 10 relevant tags than with 30 generic ones. Stories do not have a caption field in the same sense, and Threads has its own 500-character limit, so check those separately.
Line breaks are kept when you publish through the app or through a scheduler that uses the official API, but Instagram strips blank lines that contain only spaces. If you want visible paragraph gaps, use a full stop or a dot on its own line.
Scheduling Instagram captions
Meta Business Suite schedules feed posts and Reels for free. Third-party schedulers add a grid preview, hashtag sets, first-comment posting and caption templates; the Instagram page in the directory lists which tools publish feed posts, carousels, Reels and Stories directly through the Graph API, and which still rely on a reminder notification. Later and Planoly were built around the Instagram grid; Buffer, Metricool and Publer cover Instagram as one channel among many.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Instagram caption character limit?
Instagram captions are limited to 2,200 characters for feed posts, carousels and Reels. Only the first 125 characters or so are visible in the feed before the more link, so the hook has to sit at the top.
How many hashtags can I use on Instagram?
Up to 30 per post, counting the caption and the first comment together. Instagram recommends three to five relevant hashtags; more than that rarely helps reach and makes the caption harder to read.
Do emoji and line breaks count as characters?
Yes. Emoji count as one or two characters each and every line break counts as one. The counter above includes them, so the remaining figure matches what Instagram will accept.
Should Instagram captions stay short?
Short captions suit images that speak for themselves; longer captions work for tutorials, stories and carousels where people have chosen to read. Either way, lead with the point, keep hashtags organised, and use the counter to stay inside the limit.
